1.When the person's view is too expansive, helper attempts to downsize catastrophic views
2.Provide safety for unedited expression of feelings and thoughts
3.Activate client's internal motivation to use external resources
4.Safeguard person from harm
5.Bring into conscious awareness repressed/denied feelings, thoughts, and behaviors
6.Provide information, referrals, and direction so that external resources and supports can be utilized
7.Validate feelings, provide reassurances that person is experiencing normal reaction to an overwhelming event
8.Classify and categorize problems so they can be prioritized
