Rock Cycle Terms

Nettle Bowman

No description

Weathering The transfer of energy from one body to another as a result of a difference in temperature or a change in phase.
Rock Cycle Rocks formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten materials. Igneous rocks can form beneath the Earth's surface, or at its surface, as lava.
Igneous Rock The molten rock material under the earth's crust, from which igneous rock is formed by cooling.
Magma To make less warm.
Crystallization Rock that was once one form of rock but has changed to another under the influence of heat, pressure, or some other agent without passing through a liquid phase.
Heat The act or an instance of transporting.
Pressure The process by which rocks are formed, altered, destroyed, and reformed by geological processes and which is recurrent, returning to a starting point.
Cementation A naturally occurring, homogeneous inorganic solid substance having a definite chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure, color, and hardness.
Melting Solid fragments of inorganic or organic material that come from the weathering of rock and are carried and deposited by wind, water, or ice.
Deposition To be changed from a solid to a liquid state especially by the application of heat.
Metamorphic Rock Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment, especially sediment transported by water (rivers, lakes, and oceans), ice (glaciers), and wind. Sedimentary rocks are often deposited in layers, and frequently contain fossils.
Cooling The act of depositing, especially the laying down of matter by a natural process.
Sedimentary Rock To raise; elevate.
Compaction The process of compacting or the state of being compacted.
Erosion The application of continuous force by one body on another that it is touching; compression.
Uplift Molten rock that reaches the earth's surface through a volcano or fissure.
Lava The group of natural processes, including weathering, dissolution, abrasion, corrosion, and transportation, by which material is worn away from the earth's surface.
Sediment The act, process, or result of cementing.
Mineral To cause to form crystals or assume a crystalline structure.
Transportation Any of the chemical or mechanical processes by which rocks exposed to the weather undergo changes in character and break down.

Use the "Printable HTML" button to get a clean page, in either HTML or PDF, that you can use your browser's print button to print. This page won't have buttons or ads, just your puzzle. The PDF format allows the web site to know how large a printer page is, and the fonts are scaled to fill the page. The PDF takes awhile to generate. Don't panic!
