The Highwayman word puzzle.

Year 5

Here are some of the tricky words from the poem we will be reading, called The Highwayman, by ALfred Noyes.

Match the word to its correct definitions, then write them in a sentence.

casement King of Great Britain and Ireland (1714-1727)
musket An old fashioned gun with a long barrel and fired from the shoulder.
ostler A horse pulled carriage, especially a closed one, that was an early type of bus.
inn An orange-brown or yellowish-brown color.
pistol A person who serves in an army.
ribbon A hat with three corners.
tricorner hat  A strong and fast-moving stream of water or other material.
claret An old type of sailing ship, used in war or travelling.
breeches A main road, esp. one connecting major towns or cities.
stirrups A handgun
rapier Short trousers fastened just below the knee,
tawny Someone employed in a stable to take care of the horses.
landlord A flat-based loop or ring hung from either side of a horse's saddle to support the rider's foot in riding
torrent A window or part of a window set on a hinge so that it opens like a door.
galleon A thin, light, sharp-pointed sword used for thrusting
King George A long strip of material used for decoration, normally tying something.
highwayman A type of wine, that is a deep purplish-red color.
coach A man, typically on horseback, who held up travelers at gunpoint in order to rob them.
highway An establishment providing accommodations, food, and drink, esp. for travelers.
soldier An owner of a building.
